Glass Altar

Altar | MANAKA Ltd.

A new, more appropriate place for praying. This was the inspiration behind the creation of the "Sumidan" glass altar.
In line with changing lifestyles and the diversification of prayers, the style of Buddhist altars has evolved continually over the generations, particularly in cities. We tried to imagine what a new, more appropriate Buddhist altar for today’s rapidly changing and diverse world would look like. Naturally, we reflected on the shape, as well as on the material, to arrive at an optimum solution.

"Sumidan" is a new altar made entirely of glass. It is equipped with all essential functionality, yet simple enough to accommodate a variety of praying styles. We designed it meticulously, from the whole down to the tiniest detail, to be innovative, without losing sight of the traditional function and look of a Buddhist altar.

The most striking feature of this altar is the material. We opted for “glass,” for its pure and sacred impact and its visual adaptability to surroundings, qualities lacking in conventional Buddhist altars. There is a historical connection too, because although it is a thoroughly modern material, in Buddhism glass has been prized for its preciousness since ancient times, as one of the “seven treasures.”
Taking advantage of the physical properties of “glass,” and utilizing the reflection, refraction, and transmission of light, we created a uniquely rich and beautiful glass design with a dignified simplicity. This was enabled by the use of a sophisticated artisanal glass-working technique known as tome kako, which allows glass elements to be fixed together at 45° to each other.
The visual opulence and tension and the brilliant prism-like flashes of light that occasionally erupt catch the eye strongly, to create an expressive impact never before experienced in an altar. The leather mat for placing altar articles is also quite special, combining both refined leather craftsmanship and advanced techniques.

The Sumidan glass altar, a product of meticulous workmanship, from overall conception to detailed finishing, looks equally at home in Japanese-style and Western-style rooms.
From a detailed investigation of materials, necessary functions, and appearance, to implementation, the altar embodies thoroughness in all of its elements.
A special place for special thoughts. A new, beautiful, pure and “sacred place” for prayer.
